Detoxification is the process by which our bodies get rid of waste. The human body rids itself of toxins through defecation, urination and sweating which is supported heavily by the liver and kidneys.
In a healthy individual, the natural ability of the body to detox itself is a smooth process. If there is a high load of toxins, the detoxification process is sluggish and can cause sickness and affect metabolism.
Detoxification is a term often used to describe the process of weaning off of drugs and alcohol. However, in this article we will be discussing more so the body's ways of naturally removing waste and how to increase our capacity to do that, in addition to reducing our exposure to toxins.
What toxins are we talking about?
1. Chemicals ingested in diets high in processed foods, flour and sugar.
2. Alcohol
3. Heavy Metals such as mercury, lead, residues, pesticides and fertiliser.
4. Food allergens, air allergens and molds.
5. Mental, emotional, and spiritual toxins that contribute to stress causing persons to isolate themselves or develop anxiety which all has a physiological effect on how our body functions.
6. Medications: Some medications such as pain relievers or sedatives are sometimes unnecessarily used and can contribute to the toxic burden.
7. Internal toxins such as bacteria or fungus. External toxins such as chemicals applied as cosmetic products, creams, make- up, shampoos, deodorants, cleaning supplies which can contribute to hormonal or metabolic dysfunction.
How do I know if I need a detox?
Most persons know their body needs a detox for example directly after festive times such as Crop Over and Christmas where there can be a large consumption of food and alcohol and lack of rest.
In addition to being intuitive beings, the body speaks loudly when a detox is needed.
The need for detox can show up in many ways. Some examples are:
Headaches
Fatigue
Severe Premenstrual Syndrome
Insomnia
Joint pain
Excessive sinus issues
Constipation
Heart Burn
Difficulty Concentrating
Trouble losing weight
Muscle aches
Rash
These are just a few examples of symptoms that could arise. Ensure to check with your medical doctor to rule out that these symptoms are not part of a more sinister disease process before deciding that a detox a right for you.
Many diseases can be linked to toxin accumulation including Dementia, Heart Disease, Autoimmune disease, food allergies and digestive issues to name a few.
Detoxing the body can be complex, yet the actions taken toward detoxing can be simple and straight forward but requiring effort!
The aim of doing an effective detox is to maximise your body's detox capacity by REMOVING toxin exposure through food, skin and air and ADDING detoxifying foods, supplements and methodologies.
